One reason that Unix and Linux are so popular is that they are free. You can download them, burn live CDs, pop them in your computer and be running the Operating System for free. Each distribution is a little different. My suggestion to you is to download a few to get a feel of the different flavors and communities. Eventually you will find a distribution which provides you with the features that you like, coupled with the performance that you want.
